Keytool-O-Rama

Making your very own keytool necklace or keychain is quick and easy.
Here's what you'll need:

  • a long chain for a necklace, a short chain for a keychain (craft store)
  • polymer clay in whatever colors you want your keytool to have (craft store, Sculpey brand's easiest)
  • a 1/2 inch external splined tooth washer (hardware store)
  • a 3/16 x 1 roll pin (hardware store)

TO MAKE THE KEYTOOL:

Start by flattening out a rectangle of polymer clay and wrapping it all the way around the roll pin. Leave some metal showing at the ends, though.

wrapping the clay

Now make a block of clay (blue for Glitch) to be the main body of the keytool. Stick the washer to the front of this block. Add a clay icon (or other decoration) on top of the washer to hold it in place. Now stick the roll pin (slit/clay seam down) on top of the block.

assembly

Bake the keytool according to the directions on the polymer clay package. Double check that every part is stuck together really, really well before you bake the keytool or it could fall apart later. You might consider carving your keytool's name on the back before you bake it, too.

Once the keytool is baked and cooled, run a chain through the hole in the roll pin (roll pins are hollow in the middle) and you're done. I only have a scan of the first one I made, so it's a little... lumpy. But here's the general idea of what a finished one should look like:

the final product

Now you can have fun carrying around your new keytool and yelling "Glitch!" at all sorts of inappropriate times.

A NOTE ON ACCURACY: No, this isn't totally true to the keytools on the show. It's jewelry, so I let it be an artistic interpretation. I mean, we all know Glitch's ring has just 11 teeth, not 12! Don't we? ;-)
